Dr. Susan Jasko, Bridgett Nobili and Daelynn Roach were honored as faculty, staff and undergraduate student recipients, respectively, of the spring 2014 Woman of the Year Award.
The awards were announced by the President’s Commission for the Status of Women and presented March 6 at the Women’s History Month banquet.
Dr. Susan Jasko
A professor in the Communication Studies Department, Jasko was nominated for her role in connecting the disciplines of meteorology and communications at Cal U and the National Weather Service.
She also was commended for her role as the department’s internship director, and as adviser to the Public Relations Student Society of America and the Lambda Pi Eta honorary fraternity.
“I have personally observed the ways in which Dr. Jasko speaks plainly and eloquently to students about the challenges and opportunities for your women in applied communications fields,” said Communication Studies chair Dr. Gregory Spicer in nominating his colleague.
Bridgett Nobili
A Career Services adviser to the College of Education and Human Services and related graduate and Global Online programs, Nobili was commended for the success of a networking reception where successful female professionals shared career information and advice to empower students and job-seeking alumni.
As an adviser for the Sigma Kappa sorority, she has conducted workshops on resumes, professional presentations, networking and other career-related topics.
Nobili often meets with clients after-hours to accommodate their schedules.
“Bridgett makes people feel good about themselves, and her positivity and empathy for others is genuine,” said Rhonda Gifford, director Career Services, who nominated Nobili.
Daelynn Roach
A senior history major, Roach spearheaded a drive sponsored by the Activist Club to help women in developing countries who were freed from human trafficking support their families and themselves.
She also helped Women’s Studies and the Activist Club organize donations and present programs for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Roach is involved in Pi gamma Mu, an honor society for the social sciences, and is a work-study student in the Women’s Studies program.
She was nominated by Amber Preston, graduate assistant for the program.
“Whether she is helping a personal friend or attempting to make a difference in the community, she gives it her very best effort,” Preston wrote.
