VULCANS FALL IN NCAA REGIONAL FINALS

UPDATE: March 18, 2013

Cal U’s women’s basketball team lost 50-47 to host Gannon in the finals of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. 

Ashley Hines scored 12 points with 10 rebounds while Stephanie Michael also added 12 points. Cal U was unable to convert a pair of three-point attempts in the final four seconds of the game.

The Vulcans finish the season with a 22-9 overall record and advanced to the NCAA regional finals for the sixth time in 12 years.


UPDATE: March 16, 2012

The women’s basketball team defeated Glenville State, 81-79, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional at Gannon University’s Hammermill Center.

Stephanie Michael led the Vulcans with 23 points. Her layup with five seconds remaining in the game broke a 79-79 tie. 

The Vulcans improve to 22-8 overall and will play Gannon at 7 p.m. March 18 for the regional championship in the NCAA ‘Round of 16.’

This marks the sixth time the women’s basketball team has reached the regional finals and the first time since 2009. Cal U is 4-1 in its previous regional championship appearances.


UPDATE: March 15, 2012

Cal U's women's basketball team upset second-seeded Edinboro, 80-72 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional at Gannon University’s Hammermill Center.

Stephanie Michael led the Vulcans with 25 points. 

The Vulcans improve to 21-8 overall and will play Glenville State (27-3) on March 16 at 5 p.m. in the regional semifinal.

The women’s basketball team (20-8) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The team will play Edinboro at 2:30 p.m. March 15 in a Atlantic Regional opening round game at Gannon University.

The eight-team regional contest will be held March 15-18 at the Hammermill Center in Erie, Pa.

The Vulcans are making their 11th NCAA tourney appearance in 12 years — the program’s 12th NCAA tournament appearance overall. Cal U won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2004 and made the national semifinals in 2003, with other Elite Eight appearances in 2008 and 2009. 

The Atlantic Regional Champion will advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight National Championship Tournament March 26-29 in San Antonio, Texas.
