GOLFER COMPETES IN NCAA SUPER REGIONAL
Sophomore Carla Maestre will compete in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf East Super Regional Championships from May 3-5 at the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont, Ill.
The top three teams and the top three golfers not with a team from each of the four super-regional championships will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships from May 13-16 at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
Maestre tied for sixth overall at last year’s NCAA Division II East Super Regional Championship, becoming the program's first individual qualifier for the NCAA National Championships since 2009. She finished 44th at the 2014 national tournament.

WOMEN'S TENNIS HOSTS NCAA REGIONAL
The women’s tennis team earned the Atlantic Region’s top seed and will host preliminary-round matches of the NCAA Division II Tournament May 2-3 at Roadman Park, weather permitting.
West Virginia State and Charleston will meet in a first-round match at Roadman Park at noon on May 2.
The 12th ranked Vulcans (14-3) will face the winner of that first-round match at noon May 3.
In case of inclement weather, the matches could be moved to the Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park Township.
The winner of the preliminary-round tournament will advance to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships May 13-16 at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz.
Cal U earned the automatic qualifier after winning an unprecedented ninth straight PSAC championship with 5-0 conference tournament victories April 24-25 over Bloomsburg and IUP.
The Vulcans are making their 11th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. They have advanced to the national quarterfinals in each of the past six seasons.

As you know, California University’s leadership team has been working hard to bring our programs, services and payroll into alignment with both the University’s needs and the resources available.
As part of its continuing workforce plan, the University will leave five assistant coaching positions unfilled when those contracts expire on June 30, 2015. The non-renewals will affect assistant coaches in the women’s soccer, men’s soccer, baseball, football and softball programs.
One additional assistant coaching position, in volleyball, will remain unfilled after that contract expires on June 30, 2016.
Workforce adjustments are an essential step in moving the University forward as a strong and fiscally responsible institution. Nevertheless, it is always difficult to make changes that affect people’s livelihoods. I can assure you that the decision to downsize our athletics staff was made only after careful consideration.
I thank our assistant coaches for their service to the University. They have provided guidance and expertise to our student-athletes, and I wish them well in their future endeavors.
As always, I value the support of our campus community as we work side by side to provide an exceptional education and a memorable campus experience for our students.

SOFTBALL TEAM EARNS REGION’S TOP SEED
The softball team earned the Atlantic Region’s top seed and will host a four-team regional component of the NCAA Division II Tournament May 8-10 at Lilley Field, on Cal U’s upper campus.
The PSAC champion Vulcans (35-10) will face eighth-seeded St. Augustine’s (N.C.) University (20-12), champions of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, at 1 p.m. May 8.
In the other first-round game at Lilley Field, fourth-seeded Charleston (WVa.) will face fifth-seeded Gannon (Pa.) University at 3:30 p.m. May 8.
West Virginia Wesleyan, the second seed, will host the other Atlantic Regional contest, playing Seton Hill while West Chester and Concord (W. Va.) face off in first-round competition.
Winners of the double-elimination tournaments this weekend will advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. They will play a best-of-three series from May 15-16 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
The eight Super Regional champions will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament May 21-25 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Vulcans are making their eighth consecutive NCAA post-season appearance. The team has qualified for NCAA post-season play in 24 of the past 26 years.

MEN'S GOLF IN 11TH PLACE AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
UPDATE: May 5, 2015
Cal U’s men’s golf team was 19 over-par during the second round and is in 11th place at the NCAA Division II Super Atlantic/East Regional Tournament at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
Senior Jordan Eck was 2 over-par 74 in the second round and is tied for eighth heading into the final day.
The three-round tournament concludes May 6.

The men’s golf team is 38 over-par and tied for 14th place after the first round of the NCAA Division II Super Atlantic/East Regional Tournament at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

HURDLER COMPETES AT NCAA TRACK NATIONALS
Sophomore Savon Salter will compete in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships from May 21-23 at Grand Valley State University’s Track and Field Complex in Allendale, Mich.
Salter, of Penn Hills, Pa., will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. The preliminary event is set to begin at 7:55 p.m. May 21.
If Salter advances, the 400-meter hurdles finals will be held at 4:20 p.m. May 23.
Salter finished second in this event at the PSAC championships earlier this month.

Educators can pick up tips for integrating math and science with language and literacy in the early childhood setting when they attend this one-day mini-conference at California University of Pennsylvania.
The program is presented by:
- Southwest Regional Key, which provides support for early childhood education in Allegheny, Bedford, Fayette, Greene, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland counties.
- California University’s Department of Childhood Education.
Speakers include faculty members Dr. Clover Wright and Dr. William Hug.
Funding is provided by Southwest Regional Key, a regional division of PA Keys, an organization affiliated with the state Office of Child Development and Early Learning.

HELSEL CLOSED TODAY FOR POLICE TRAINING
California University Police officers will be participating with other regional officers in ALICE Instructor Training today in Helsel Hall.
The ALICE program provides training in survival-enhancing options for critical moments after a violent situation begins and when law enforcement arrives at the scene.
Helsel Hall will be closed during the daylong training session. No faculty, staff or students will be permitted to enter the building.
Reminders of the building closure will be posted on the doors to Helsel Hall. Members of the campus community should not be alarmed if they see or hear police officers in the vicinity of Helsel Hall.

A MESSAGE FROM INTERIM PRESIDENT JONES
At its June 30 meeting, the Board of Governors for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education approved the University’s request to acquire our six main-campus residence halls from SAI, the Student Association Inc., and to pay off the debt for those buildings through State System bonds.
Currently, SAI owns the six buildings and pays the University to manage them. SAI splits housing profits with the University, retaining 30% and giving 70% to Cal U.
I’d like to explain the University’s plan to assume ownership of the residence halls and tell you why our leadership team believes this change will benefit both the University and our Cal U students.
First, some background: The main-campus residence halls were built between 2004 and 2008. The six buildings include 726 units, with 1,497 beds. Construction was funded through a variable-rate financing model that included occupancy and debt coverage ratios that must be met.
Had the financing arrangement for the buildings been altered before June 30, 2015, SAI would have faced a substantial penalty. But a key agreement is expiring, making this the right time for the University to assume ownership of the halls.
Why acquire the residence halls?
The plan to acquire the residence halls has a number of benefits. Most importantly, it has the potential to reduce operational costs and give our University the flexibility to lower room rates. That could make campus housing more affordable for students and their families.
The University Housing Office also would gain the ability to change room configurations in order to meet student demand, perhaps by making more single rooms available.
We believe the plan makes good business sense, too. It frees the University from bond covenant restrictions regarding occupancy, converts to a low fixed-rate financing model, and eliminates more than $500,000 per year in expenses.
Although the purchase will add to the University’s overall debt, the estimated reduction in annual debt service payments is substantial — perhaps as much as $34 million in savings over 25 years, compared to the current financing model.
What’s next?
Once the acquisition is completed, the University will manage main-campus housing. This will be a seamless change, since Cal U has provided oversight and management support to the residence halls since they were constructed.
SAI will continue to own Vulcan Village and the SAI Farm, and to fund clubs and organizations for Cal U students.
Residential living can be an important part of a student’s college experience, and Cal U is committed to offering campus housing that is convenient, safe and affordable. As the University assumes ownership of its residence halls, I can assure you that we will continue to provide the same high-quality facilities and services that our students have come to expect.

I am proud to announce an academic milestone for our University: Beginning in the Spring 2016 semester, Cal U will offer a Doctor of Health Science degree with a focus on Health Science and Exercise Leadership.
This will be the University’s first doctoral program and the first D.H.Sc. available within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.
The degree offering was approved today, July 9, by the Board of Governors for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. It is a natural outgrowth of Cal U’s 100% online programs in exercise science, which include bachelor’s and master’s degree options.
100% online
To meet the needs of working professionals, coursework for the Doctor of Health Science program will be delivered 100% online through the Cal U Global Online office. All classes will be taught by Cal U faculty who are recognized experts in the field.
The Doctor of Health Science is a three-year, 50-credit program. Candidates should expect to complete a rigorous program of study that includes 42 credits of coursework, comprehensive written and oral exams, and an 8-credit dissertation representing applied, evidence-based research clearly linked to exercise, wellness and/or fitness.
Graduates will be prepared to work as educators, administrators and leaders in areas such as athletic training, physical or occupational therapy, exercise physiology, wellness and fitness, rehabilitation science, and allied health care professions.
The D.H.Sc. program also will maintain the University’s existing relationships with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the National Association of Speed and Explosion, and WellCoaches Corp., all leading organizations in the field.
Employment potential
A growing interest in wellness and fitness has driven student demand for academic programs in health and exercise science. And like all new programs introduced at Cal U, the Doctor of Health Science was developed with employment potential in mind.
In Pennsylvania, the Center for Workforce Information and Data Analysis projects significant employment growth in health science occupations relevant to the degree, with nearly 10,000 new jobs being added by 2022. Nationally, nearly 1.1 million new jobs are anticipated within the same time period.
The head athletic trainer for an NFL team and the president of a nationally recognized fitness organization are among the professionals who submitted letters of support for the program.
Alumni of Cal U’s existing master’s degree programs in exercise science are at work across the country and around the world. Their success in a wide variety of settings, from their own businesses to the locker rooms and practice fields of professional sports teams, demonstrates the quality of our University’s academic programming in this discipline.
I’d like to thank Dr. Marc Federico, Dr. Jeffrey Hatton and Dr. Stan Komacek for their work in preparing the degree proposal.
I invite our graduate students and eligible alumni to consider the Doctor of Health Science degree — and to recommend the program to colleagues who may wish to enhance or advance their careers.
