Members of the Cal U community and the public may attend a free concert at 8 p.m. June 15 at Carnegie Music Hall of Oakland, part of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh

The Washington (Pa.) Symphony Orchestra will perform under the direction of Dr. Yuko Ikach, principal conductor and co-chair of the Department of Music and Theatre at California University of Pennsylvania.

The performance of “Willa Cather’s Iron City Music” is part of the 16th International Willa Cather Seminar, June 11-17 at Duquesne University.

Cather was an American novelist in the first half of the 20th century who lived in Pittsburgh (1896-1906) and New York. The seminar examines the influences of Pittsburgh on her life and career.

The concert — which was organized by Ikach; Dr. Kim Vanderlaan, a Cather scholar and associate professor in the Cal U Department of English; and her husband, Brett Vanderlaan, a musician who also studies Cather — will feature pieces that would have been played in Cather’s day.

Kim Vanderlaan received grants from the University’s Faculty Professional Development Center and the State System of Higher Education to plan and present the concert.

Admission to “Willa Cather’s Iron City Music” is free, but reservations are required. To request tickets, contact Brett Vanderlaan at 301-919-1935 or ironcityconcert@aol.com.
